Производство стальных канатов аналогично производству канатов из натуральных волокон.
Отдельные проволоки сначала скручивают в прядь, а затем несколько таких прядей берут и накручивают вокруг сердечника.
Сердечник может быть стальным или из натуральных волокон, например из конопли.
Сердечник служит внутренней опорой и амортизатором для прядей и самого каната в целом. Он должен противостоять радиальному давлению прядей при натяжении каната, не допуская его поперечной деформации.
